When we think of productivity we might think of a calm person in a calm, efficient environment that is picture-perfect.
We probably think of the scenes we see on social media and YouTube videos that promote productivity and productive lifestyles and habits. However, we know that life is not always picture-perfect and that productivity doesn’t always come tied up neatly in a bow.
We don’t always have a calm, peaceful environment in which to be productive. Many of us live and/or work in environments that have lots of external noise, distractions and limitations. It could be colleagues, neighbours, children, partners, pets, the general public, or anyone at all that causes this noise and distraction. It doesn’t matter who it is, it just matters that it affects our work and our concentration levels.
However, thankfully, it is still possible to be productive even in these busier environments. It might just take some extra measures on your part to ensure your own productivity.
Here’s how we do it.
Grounding
Noise and business around us can very quickly cause us stress and upset, especially if we are trying to get work done or be productive. First things first, we need to ground ourselves and engage in some relaxation techniques before we can get started on what we need to do.
A lot of people have the mistaken idea that people who are productive run about working, creating and producing every second of every day and they are able to do it without stress because they are simply so good at it.
But this is very rarely the case.
The people who are productive are able to do so because they are able to calm themselves and ground themselves into their own present moment so that they can have clear minds. Having a clear mind helps you to get things done the way nothing else does.
Noise-cancelling techniques
This one might seem obvious, but it is essential.
If you are finding it hard to concentrate in a busy or loud environment, get some noise-cancelling apparatus. The most common form would be noise-cancelling headphones. Good ones might cost a little bit but they are definitely worth it.
Take outside breaks
If you are in a busy and loud environment for too long it can get very overwhelming and stressful, and you will find it much harder to get anything done. The best thing you can do for yourself is to take decent breaks throughout the day in which you go outside and get fresh air.
Never underestimate how much good a hard reset of your brain can do, and going out for a fresh air break is the best way to reset your brain.
It doesn’t have to be for long and you don’t have to go far, but incorporating it into your day will make things much easier.
Set boundaries
Where you can remember to set boundaries with others in the environment in which you work. If people are being unreasonably loud or invading your personal space, explain to them how this is negatively affecting you and communicate with them directly. Most people will make reasonable adjustments when asked.
Your peace is important, and it is important to ask for it.
