Finding the right job is really important in life. When we are in the wrong job, it is very easy for our mental health, emotional health, and even physical health to decline. We can become withdrawn and unmotivated if we are in the wrong job or career path, and this can carry on long after we are no longer in the job.
Long story short: it’s super important to pick the right job for you and your own life.
But how do you do it?
There will always be lots of advice and content out there about this sort of thing, particularly so in the age of “The Great Resignation”. Sometimes this doesn’t help either, with so much content out there on the same subject it can be hard to cypher through and find what you really need.
We want to keep it simple.
Here are 3 easy and accessible ways to help yourself land the best possible job for you.
Do more research that you think you have to
Research is always your friend when it comes to making big decisions, but it is important to think about what kind of research you are doing when it comes to thinking about jobs.
If you are reading about a certain career through blogs and articles by people in that career, posted on company blogs, or endorsed by certain career posting sites, are they likely to be unbiased?
Not really.
When you are researching what it is really like to be in a career and a certain job, it is always a good idea to make sure you are reading lots of different sources to get a good mixture of biased and unbiased reviews.
Widen your search too, don’t feel that you need to be pigeonholed into what is in your area or what you are qualified for already. Your dream job might be 100 miles away and it might require one more qualification, which is ok and totally worth it.
Talk to others in the same position
If you aren’t comfortable reaching out to people directly either online or in person, you can do this step by reading personal (unsponsored) YouTube videos and blogs, or checking out some forums and comment sections.
It is always a good idea to get a real human’s thoughts and opinions on a certain job, workplace, or career before you make any big decisions. It can also help you figure out what your next steps will be if you did decide that career could be right for you.
It’s good to get a mix of opinions and stories as, again, people can be biased or have very individual experiences that might not be shared by a majority.
Think carefully about your working style and personal needs
A really key thing to remember in job searching is that what is good for the goose isn’t always good for the gander.
You need to think about what will be genuinely and authentically good for you and your own working style, rather than what might be good for someone else or what looks good on paper.
Try not to be influenced by what other people think about certain careers and go with your gut instead. Only you know yourself the best.
You are going to spend a long part of your life working and so this is a decision that we need to get right.
