Getting into a creative slump is a common problem. We’ve all been there at least once before, haven’t we?
Often things get a little too much and we get a little bit down about our work, our hobbies, and our passions. Our time is tied up in too many other things and we can’t seem to think of one single original and exciting idea.
It all sounds a little too familiar to me.
Getting into a creative slump can be a really trying time and sometimes it is pretty difficult to get out of it again. But don’t fear just yet, this isn’t an entirely lost cause. There are, thankfully, some things that we can do to get ourselves out of a creative slump and get ourselves back on the right track again.
Let’s hear them, Maestro.
Take a trip
Wait, didn’t you say these were going to be easy and quick tips?
Yes, but taking a trip doesn’t have to mean an expensive holiday halfway across the world.
Getting a change of scenery and a change of perspective is a really nifty way to get yourself out of any creative slump. Sometimes our brains simply need a breath of fresh air to get out of the funk they are in, and this is as literal as it is metaphorical.
You can take a day trip, a trip to the beach, the forest, a new town, anything at all that gets you out of your day to day routine in the same place.
Even if you don’t get out of the house much, getting out and going somewhere different for an afternoon will really help.
If you have the money and the time to take a longer trip, good for you, this would be a great option if you can do it.
Network and connect
Sometimes being in a creative slump can be a sign that we are too mentally isolated. Connecting and networking with other people can be fuel for our inspiration and motivation levels and input from others can help us open new doors.
Being lonely and isolated puts us in a slump, being connected brings us out of it.
If you can’t, or don’t want to, see people in real life right now, you can always use the Internet and social media to bridge the gap.
Try and network with people who are in a similar field as you or have the same interests, and you should find yourself getting out of that slump a lot quicker than you would do alone.
Take a break
This one won’t work if you have a deadline coming up, granted. But sometimes a break is all we need to get out of a creative slump.
The slump itself can be a sign that we desperately need a break and our brain is trying to tell us this before we burn out.
It’s important to listen to our brains and take a rest when we need to.
Sometimes your answer on how to work or create more is simply to not do so right now. Your creativity and inspiration will come back when you are ready and well-rested.
Work can wait until then.
